It looks like this is out again (April 2020) as I was able to get a tin that is labeled from September 2019 at my local tobacconist. The tobacco is ready to smoke as far as moisture is concerned. ----- Update 3/15/2021 ----- I decided to try a tin of the 2020 production to compare it to the below. My whole mouth feels abused. Historically, I avoided Virginia tobacco as it seemed to have clashed with my system. Taken straight from Carolina soil, these top-tiered Virginias are all grown, threshed, blended, and then lovingly pressed and carefully sliced right here in the heart of old tobacco country. Been enjoying the blend in a number of varied pipes incl uding two Savinelli "Bing's Favorite" long-stemmed Billiards, a couple of Brighams and a couple of other pipes I pulled from the rack from rotation. Right out of the tin the moisture was perfect, no drying time needed at all. That set-up out of the way, I am very glad to have ordered a sufficient quantity of this Small Batch. This looks like a great VA and should age well. The 2020 is from a different crop as shown in the description. The flavor is richer and deeper than many newly tinned red Virginias out there. There is more complexity in this blend than others in this genre too. The tobacco is in a broken flake like the last batch and looks great. I opened the tin I had put in the cellar and found no mold, jarred it and put it back to age. but remember the leaf is already two years old. Presbyterian Ordained Pipe Tobacco. After the charring light, I tamped it again and lit up for real. The flavor is rich and lingers on the palate. I have, so far, been disappointed in the raw, dusty, burley-heavy American tobacco scene when it comes to Virginias, with the exception of McClelland. Ive found that the note comes through Best when are taking your time, creating near whisp-like smoke. Imagine sourcing the extremely fine Red Virginias that McClelland used but then instead of dumping the ketchup sauce (vinegar) on the tobacco, choosing not to do that instead. This is a really great smooth, no bite tobacco which I also learned that Red Virginia usually has a low sugar content and I am sure that is why it is bite free. At my age I am not planning on 10-15 years, as I very well might not be here then. Smelling it brings hay and dark fruit to mind. Cornell & Diehl Pipe Tobaccos include hundreds of blends made in the US with top-quality leaf from all over the world. I was hoping it would stay on the lighter, brighter side of the Virginia spectrum, but that's okay. Very nice red VA flake. Similar Blends: A little like C & Ds Red Ribbon, McCranies in flavor but with considerably more strength.. Was eager to try this with all the hype. Cayenne, Korean Red pepper (Gochugaru). The retrohale is full, round, and smooth, but spicy, and present. The tobacco is smoked cool enough, does not overheat the pipe, burns slowly, leaving a light gray fine ash. Pipe Used: 6mm Savinellis and a Chacom Billiard. Similar to McClelland 40th Anniversary but a little rough around the edges. C&D and this site provide great products and services but should help customers on this one to make this a smooth process. Well two had massive creases in the tin so I chose to open the worst one and popped the dent out with my fingers and you could hardly tell the difference. Mid nic hit and a wonderful bready and slightly incense retrohale. What do I do if I want more? Wish this one was available all year. This is not your candy store or typical aromatic tobacco. It comes in the form of broken flake which I prefer, it just makes things easier when time comes to rub it out. C&D's small batch is one of the best tobaccos for new smokers or veterans. But I have to say, I've heard the old timer's talk about legendary tobacco's. blends, and i look for the sweetness and spice often associated with those types of blends, this didn't have it, the flavor reminded me somewhat of a toasted cigar, not bad at all but just not my preference. No tongue bite unless pushed to hard which is hard to do. Is it Small Batch? A gentle hay-like flavour is notable throughout a bowl, it doesn't make it too ''light'' a flavour but does reduce any chance of the fruity side seeming too clumsy. All rights reserved. Once I am done with the tin, it will be a while until I get the distinct pleasure of cracking open another with some years on it. Nice Virginia broken flake and C&D did not lie when they said it came from a special grade of Virginia. last year's sun bear was good after aging and i wont smoke this year's till next year. It is amazingly sweet for red VA, but it is also fairly pungent (like the tin note), and these contrasting qualities balance this blend beautifully. There are several fruity nuances that run together making a kind of "fruit punch" flavor that's only mildly sweet and somewhat tart. The second third gets darker, richer, and earthier. Visual Note - Red flake with light brown spots mixed throughout. If you find mold you can get your dough back. It is not an overly complex smoke but it is not without nuance. The quality of the red Virginia in this blend rivals the McClelland Virginias in their 40th Anniversary and Christmas Cheer offerings, but does not possess nearly the vinegar/ ketchup smell and taste that they (particularly Christmas Cheer and some of their other blends) do. Mechanically, the blend is perfect out of the tin as far as moisture is concerned. The cigar taste and aroma is not necessarily bad but not what I expected from this tobacco. With McClelland defunct, it replaces the nostalgia of Christmas Cheer in terms of being released at a certain time every year. Very disappointed. It's a spectacular blend! This is the blend of Gold. If I to had place it somewhere on a list, I wo uld place it between the 2019 batch of CRF and C&Ds Burley Flake #2. I've been enjoying pipes for the past 35 years. All my pipes are fed a diet of light to heavy English blends and VaPers so there is always some residual flavor influence. It will however not replace the flavor profile or quality of CC. It does light easily and stays lit with no need to relight throughout the smoke. The tobacco leaves have an interesting texture and seem to be a little bit thicker than other Virginia varietals I have tried. I have had to take this one to filtered pipes to cut some of the overwhelming nic out. It is slightly sweet and exhaling through the nose has some spice and a little citrus as if the heavy fruit is an orange that is a too ripe. Plenty of flavor and rich smoke, just not my cup of tea, I got a bitter taste. Not a creamy blend, but certainly smooth. The good news for my pipe club was that a fellow member who is in love with all these small batch C&D blends brought a tin to our meeting. Lemony with some other dried fruits, but not hay-like or grassy like a lot of the typical pure Virginias. Right off the bat, there is a dominant flavor of earthy pepper with a barely detectable note of plum sweetness. I've smoked the 2020 crop and I'm almost done my first tin. When I initially opened the tin, I thought the moisture content was slightly high but very smokable . Compared to the 2020 edition, which was broken flake all red virginia at 8.6% sugar, THIS 2022 edition is a red-orange virginia mix and has 13.6% sugar, a 60%+ improvement. The tangy after taste very pleasantly lingers a little, and the room note is a little sweet. Not saying the differences are 100% sugar content related Still blows back the hair but not as far. My clear expectation is that it will age like a champ. This does not have heavy tangy/sour smell of something like 515 RC-1 (missed 5100), it is more muted and earthy. It is much stronger & tastier than the wimpy, McCrannie's Red Ribbon which didn't impress me in the least but it did possess a good flavor but this one is richer & tangier with a more earthy flavor.
